One month following a return the Suer Bowl, The New England Patriots are moving on from veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs. According to0 reports, the Patriots informed the four-time Pro Bowler that he will be released when the NFL’s new league year begins on March 11.
Diggs, 32, spent just one season in New England after signing a three-year, $63.5 million contract in 2025. The decision is largely financial: his salary-cap number was set to jump significantly for the 2026 season, and releasing him allows the Patriots to create roughly $16.8 million in cap space as they reshape their roster heading into free agency.
Despite the short tenure, Diggs remained productive. In 2025 he led the Patriots with 85 receptions for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns, quickly becoming a favorite target of quarterback Drake Maye during a season that saw New England reach Super Bowl LX, where they ultimately fell to the Seattle Seahawks.
Diggs acknowledged the move shortly after the news surfaced, posting a message on social media thanking the organization and calling the season in New England “a hell of a year.”
Diggs is also dealing with an ongoing legal matter in Massachusetts tied to an alleged December 2025 incident involving his former private chef. Prosecutors say the dispute stemmed from a disagreement over unpaid wages and allege Diggs assaulted the woman during the confrontation. Diggs pleaded not guilty to charges after the Super Bowl that include felony strangulation and misdemeanor assault and battery and his attorneys say he intends to contest the accusations as the case proceeds through court. The legal entanglement follows the news that girlfriend and mother of his newborn child Cardi B also called it quits on Diggs shortly after the Super Bowl loss.
The veteran receiver now enters free agency as one of the most recognizable pass-catchers available. A former All-Pro who previously starred with the Minnesota Vikings, Buffalo Bills, and Houston Texans, Diggs is expected to draw interest from several teams looking for an experienced playmaker as the NFL offseason begins.
